ESA pavilion ‘L’Europe de l’Espace, Europe in Space’ at the 47th Paris Air Show

This year the International Paris Air Show will take place from 18 to 24 June at Le Bourget. The ESA Pavilion will be located in its usual place between the full scale models of the Ariane 1 and Ariane 5 launchers, next to the permanent Air and Space Museum at Le Bourget.

Chinese space agency joins International Charter ‘Space and Major Disasters’

The China National Space Administration (CNSA) becomes the newest member of the International Charter ‘Space and Major Disasters’, a joint initiative for providing emergency response satellite data free of charge to those affected by disasters anywhere in the world.

Cluster: ESA spacecraft flying closer than ever for better science

After weeks of manoeuvres, Samba and Tango, two of ESA’s four Cluster satellites are now orbiting in formation, separated by only 17 km. This is the closest two ESA satellites have ever been in routine operations and will enable new scientific discoveries.

Two more active moons around Saturn

Saturn’s moons Tethys and Dione are flinging great streams of particles into space, according to data from the NASA/ESA/ASI Cassini mission to Saturn. The discovery suggests the possibility of some sort of geological activity, perhaps even volcanic, on these icy worlds.

Magnetic fields get reconnected in turbulent plasma too, Cluster reveals

Using measurements of the four ESA Cluster satellites, a study published this week in Nature Physics shows pioneering experimental evidence of magnetic reconnection also in turbulent ‘plasma’ around Earth.

Contract signed for building of GMES Sentinel-1 satellite

ESA and Thales Alenia Space have signed a €229 million contract for the design and development of Sentinel-1, the first Earth observation satellite to be built for Europe’s Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) programme.

Atlantis crew to prepare ISS further for the European Columbus laboratory

Space Shuttle Atlantis is due to lift off late tonight on its way to the International Space Station. Mission STS-117 will deliver and install components to increase the Station’s electricity generating capability and prepare for the arrival of new laboratory modules from ESA and the Japanese Space Agency.
