An eerie blue glow and ominous columns ofdark dust highlight M78 and other brightreflection nebulain the constellation of Orion. The dark filamentarydust not only absorbs light, but also reflects thelight of several bright blue stars thatformed recently in the nebula. Of the two reflection nebulaspictured above, the more famous nebula isM78, in the image center, whileNGC 2071 can be seen to its lower left.The same type of scattering that colors thedaytime sky further enhances the blue color. M78is about fivelight-years across and visible through a small telescope. M78 appears above only as it was1600 years ago,however, because that is how long it takes light to go fromthere to here. M78belongs to the largerOrionMolecularCloudComplexthat contains theGreat Nebula in Orion and theHorsehead Nebula.

Why doesn’tmatter just bunch up? The same principle that keepsneutron stars andwhite dwarf starsfrom imploding alsokeeps people from imploding and makesnormal matter mostly empty space.The observed reason is known as thePauli Exclusion Principle. The principle states that identicalfermions — one type offundamental matter — cannot be in the same placeat the same time and with the same orientation. The other type of matter, bosons, do not have this property, asdemonstrated clearly by recently createdBose-Einstein condensates. Earlier this decade, thePauliExclusion Principle wasdemonstrated graphically in theabove picture of clouds of twoisotopes of lithium — the left cloud composed ofbosons while the right cloud is composed offermions. As temperaturedrops, the bosons bunch together, while thefermions better keep their distance. The reason why thePauli Exclusion Principle is true and the physical limitsof the principle are still unknown.
