Phobos flyby season starts again

Today Mars Express began a series of flybys of Phobos, the largest moon of Mars. The campaign will reach its crescendo on 3 March, when the spacecraft will set a new record for the closest pass to Phobos, skimming the surface at just 50 km. The data collected could help untangle the origin of this mysterious moon.

CryoSat launch delayed

The launch of ESA’s CryoSat-2 satellite from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, scheduled for 25 February, has been delayed due to a concern related to the second stage steering engine of the Dnepr launcher.

A jewel of the southern sky,the Great Carina Nebula, aka NGC 3372,spans over 300 light-years.Near the upper right ofthisexpansive skycape, it ismuch larger than the more northerlyOrion Nebula.In fact, the Carina Nebula is one of ourgalaxy’s largest star-formingregions and home to young, extremely massive stars,including the stillenigmatic variable Eta Carinae,a star with well over 100 times the massof the Sun.Nebulae near the center of the 10 degree wide field includeNGC 3576 andNGC 3603.Near center at the top of the frame is open star clusterNGC 3532,the Wishing Well Cluster.More compact,NGC 3766,the Pearl Cluster, can be spotted at the left.Anchoring the lower left of the cosmic canvas is another largestar-forming region, IC 2948 with embeddedstar cluster IC 2944.That region ispopularly known asthe RunningChicken Nebula

ESA highlights the potential of satellite data for the European Investment Bank

Tons of Water Ice Found on the Moon’s North Pole (SPACE.com)

SPACE.com – Vastpockets of water ice numbering in the millions of tons have been discovered atthe north pole of the moon, opening up another region of the lunar surface forpotential exploration by astronauts and unmanned probes, NASA announced Monday.
