ContributorNetwork – COMMENTARY | What is a space shuttle? Is it a collection of parts? Is it a machine? No, it is a unique community of people from all over the world that came together to pioneer a new capability. They worked to build and operate the system that we know as the space shuttle. The program brought together most of the world in a cooperative effort for science and exploration that grew into the International Space Station. The shuttle team was not only from the United States, but Europe and Japan, and it later included even the Russians. Shuttle program hardware was built all over the world, and was the training program for the International Space Station. What other program, even considering the major conflicts we have had, has brought together such a diverse group of countries?

Europe’s unmanned ATV space freighter plunged on command into Earth’s atmosphere today to end its mission as a spectacular shooting star over the southern Pacific Ocean. Contact with the spacecraft was lost at 20:41:39 GMT (22:41:39 CEST) at an altitude of 80 km.

AP – The few specks of dust stuck to a small swatch weren’t much to look at, but federal prosecutors said Thursday that those flecks, which were set to be auctioned off in St. Louis, came from the moon via Apollo 11 and have been sent back to NASA where they belong.
